A sweet broth

Sometime ago a Shiatsu friend recommended a recipe for headaches which worked well for me. Here it is:

You need four “round” vegetables: Onion, carrot, pumpkin and cabbage.

Cut the onion in large pieces, two or three carrots also in pieces, a section of pumpkin and one of cabbage. Put them into a pot, cover with water and on a low heat let it simmer for about 45 minutes.

Leave the broth to stand for several minutes and then drink it either hot or warm or you can drink it throughout the day. You can discard the vegetables or use them in a soup or stew. The major parts of the nutrients are in the broth but the vegetables contain fibre.

Sweetness is the taste that corresponds to the element Earth in Chinese Medicine. In us humans the, Earth element corresponds to our stability and is related with the digestive system and our capacity to assimilate at various levels. Headaches can be related to nervousness and agitation, a state of worry and preoccupation. If we help our bodies to calm down by providing them with foods that correspond to the Earth element taste it can help the person regain their equilibrium.

Many Chinese doctors today suggest food as a cure before advising prescribed drugs.

Pumpkin soup with turmeric

DSC_0053TDSC_0056urmeric, the natural spice colouring in curry powders is a natural analgesic (painkiller) which can help relieve arthritic and other pain and has been used in Ayurvedic Medicine for centuries. It has been found to have many other health promoting properties including:- being a liver and nerve protector, lowers cholesterol, benefits heart health, helps remove toxic metals from the body, is anti microbial and fungicidal, a powerful antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic. Adding black pepper to the turmeric is reported to significantly increase it’s anti cancer properties.

It clearly is a spice with many health benefits and by using it when we can in our food we help our bodies to regulate our health and wellbeing.

Here is a simple, quick and tasty soup to make on these cold evenings which is loaded with health giving properties:-

*  1  medium onion,  *  +/- 600 grms. pumpkin (type – butternut),  *  1 heaped tbsp. Turmeric powder.  *  ½  tsp. black pepper.

Cut up the onion and pumpkin into small pieces, put in a pot and add the turmeric and pepper. Add several glugs of olive oil and mix all together coating all the pieces in the pot. On a relatively high heat sauté the ingredients for about two minutes constantly stirring, then,  add boiling water to just cover the ingredients, turn down to a medium heat, put the cover on the pot and allow the contents to cook until soft (+/- 20 minutes).Blend in a blender until smooth. Put in a bowl, decorate, serve and enjoy.

 

Natural anti-inflammatory in your food

Cúrcuma, piña“Let food be your medicine” is perhaps one of the best known statements from the father of medicine Hippocrates!

In our modern day lifestyle more and more of our foods are manipulated in unnatural ways and / or processed with artificial additives so that they can taste, smell and look better and last longer. With these ever increasing combined chemical cocktails in our food a growing number of experts believe that these are a major contributing factor to the increasing number of allergic and intolerance reactions in people today.

Clearly eating food in its most natural state is the ideal, but living in today’s society we can’t always ensure all we eat is completely natural. We have to have faith in our bodies to deal with the bad cocktails and mixtures we ingest and come in contact with but clearly we want to limit these occurrences to the minimum and not take undue advantage of our body’s capacity to deal with too much toxic ingestion. Listening to our bodies and taking action when we realise something is not right, is also, clearly essential. Learning to incorporate natural foods, herbs and spices into our diet that will help our bodies to help us can only improve our quality and enjoyment of life.

When we are in pain we generally do something to try to get rid of it. Pain is our body’s way of telling us something is wrong and it needs help. Instead of using a propriety analgesic, our bodies will appreciate and benefit more if we use something natural.

Three of natures more powerful anti inflammatory (painkillers) are turmeric, ginger and bromelain. In forthcoming articles we will give some simple recipes and ways to use these natural painkillers.

 

Autumn air

Aire de otoñoSeveral weeks of autumn have just slipped by and all around us we can start to see nature preparing for the winter months ahead, changing colours, shedding leaves, energy going inwards and conserving and renovating   her reserves.

On our regular walks into the countryside we notice, the air is now cooler, fresher and also clearer and more invigorating. We see the leaves of bright yellows and orange and rustic reds on some of the trees among the robust dark green encinas and other evergreens. In the autumn air breezes and flurries the leaves like fiesta confetti dance and swirl around us laying mottled coloured carpets to walk on and appreciate and reflect on. All these bright colours are given back to the earth to recycle again into the plants and trees.

We see all these chakra colours (reds, oranges, yellows and greens) as a delightful reminder for us to prepare ourselves to keep warm and hearty and to nourish ourselves with similar coloured foods (like carrots, oranges, lemons, edible red berries, cabbages etc.)

It seems like the colours of the three lower chakras are being temporarily put aside to be nourished and recharged ready for the next year’s cycle. Green the colour of our middle chakra (heart), is the constant link to our three higher chakras which now need to be focused on, with reflexion and meditation:-

Our Communication (blue) both with ourselves and with others.

Our Intuition (indigo) – to expand our consciousness and gain insights into our life’s purpose.

Our Spirituality (violet) – to help us find our connection with nature and the universal energy.

Start now to slow down and give yourself time for more reflexion and meditation. Get out in the autumn air, let go of the old in this autumn seasons breezes and start to recycle and rejuvenate ready for the start of the next seasonal New Year.

Pesto on the Chair Course

pesto ingAll participants on the recent chair course in Madrid showed great interest in all aspects of the weekend and worked hard over the two days of intensive learning. The mid-day meal on the Saturday was pasta for which we made a large bowl of “Pesto” salsa. From all the encouraging and enthusiastic comments we received about the course and the weekend Pesto seemed to clearly stand out and all wanted to know our recipe for it. So here it is:

Ingredients:- (Serves two people)

_ +/- 20 g. of chopped fresh basil (small packets provided in supermarkets)

_ 2 heaped tablespoons of pine nuts

_ 2 heaped tablespoons of finely grated cheese (“grana padano” or “parmesan”)

_ Extra virgin olive oil

_ 1 medium clove of garlic

_ ½ teaspoon sea salt

 

Put all ingredients in a blender, push them down a bit and cover with extra virgin olive oil. Blend all together. Let it stand for at least half an hour before serving.

 

For larger quantities simply increase proportionately the quantities in the basic recipe. Make it thicker or thinner by increasing or reducing the oil.

The salsa can be kept covered in the fridge for several weeks without deteriorating.

The Chair travels to Donosti

ccdThis last weekend we started the first seminar of the chair course in Donosti. We had six enthusiastic participants eager to learn and the time seemed to fly by. On Saturday we did eight hours of intensive work and had three different models of ergonomic chairs to work on. By the end of another six hours on Sunday all participants were able to give and receive the complete sequence and experienced some of its benefits. The weekend provided a great sense of accomplishment for us all. Our congratulations to all participants for their dedicated and hard work and we look forward to the second seminar on the 8th / 9th November when we can fine tune the techniques once the sequence has been learnt and thoroughly practiced.

Our thanks to Aitor for organising and getting the course together. Sorry we didn’t see him on Sunday – the night before he chose a sushi instead of a shiatsu and ended up in hospital with anisakis .We hope he is now fully recovered. Our thanks also to Teresa for her hospitality and making us feel at home.

In spite of our concentrated schedule we were able to have an hour or two to enjoy some early morning views of the beach and promenade and take in a few pinchos on the Sunday evening –great!

We are preparing now for the Chair course in Madrid on 17th/ 18th October. So if any of you out there are interested – there are still places, contact us .

A salt bath

epsom-salt-crystal-bather-mVery often we can help ourselves with simple remedies that can ease common aches and pains. One of the most useful we have found to be: – soaking in a hot bath (with about 2 kgs of coarse natural sea salt dissolved in the water) for 20 minutes or more. This can often thoroughly relax mind and body and take away aches and pains from stressed muscles and joints. It cost little and can have great results.

Always try to use natural sea salt which does not have any additives put in to stop the salt clogging. About 2kgs to an average bath full of water gives a sufficient concentration to draw out toxins from our skin. The water should be hot enough so that you can comfortable get in and the water should cover your body when you lie down in it. Try to maintain the water temperature for the time you are in the bath to allow toxins causing pain to be drawn out.

This simple inexpensive remedy has helped many people and is one that we often recommend to our friends and clients. I remember an ex student of ours who phoned one day and asked if we could suggest any thing that she could do that may help her brother who had been suffering for some time from sciatica and lower back pain. He had apparently been receiving physiotherapy without much result. We suggested she advise her brother to try salt baths to see if they would help. A few months later she was in touch and was delighted to be able to tell us that her brother had been using the salt baths regularly and no longer had sciatica or lower back problems.

Aah! So much from simple things.

 

WHY IN A CHAIR?

SillasSome of the first chairs ergonomically designed for giving massages were produced in the USA in the mid nineteen eighties. The wooden chair in the above photo is a replica of one of these, alongside a lighter and more modern metal version. Over the succeeding years new and lighter metal models were developed which have proved popular with manual therapists because of their versatility and transportability, why:

* They are relatively light; can easily be carried around and set up quickly in a small space (needs approx. 2 metres sq.)

* The chair offers maximum support and allows the client to relax completely.

* The back, neck and shoulders, one of the most stressed areas of the body are amply exposed and the therapist can work without obstruction and easily move around the client.

 

Although there are many forms of manual bodywork that can be done on the chair; for maximum effect and minimum fuss (which allows the client to stay fully clothed), a combination of acupressure and massage techniques applied in a determined and rhythmic manner have been found to be extremely effective in general and particularly so in the work environment for relaxing and reducing stress levels.

This type of bodywork done in the workplace is typically known as”on-site massage” because the therapist takes and sets up the chair at the place of the client but equally it can be done from anywhere else as  a relaxation /de-stress treatment aid.

Anybody who effectively learns and applies these techniques will have a marvellous tool at their disposal to help friends and family even if they do not wish to take it further. An ordinary chair or stool can be effectively and comfortably arranged to apply the sequence we teach.
